Memorial Castings
A memorial casting is a deeply meaningful way to preserve the memory of a loved one after they have passed, by creating a lasting, tangible sculpture of their hand. This process involves visiting the person who has passed at a funeral home, home, or hospital to carefully mold their hands or the hands of those close to them.
At Lumilos, we create deeply personal and lasting memorial castings that preserve the unique bond shared with loved ones. Our life castings are an artistic tribute, capturing the essence of a person’s touch, and honouring the memory of someone who has passed.
The Process:
Our process begins with the careful preparation of skin-safe alginate, a material that molds around the hands to capture every intricate detail. We gently position the hands to ensure each curve, fingerprint, and subtle crease is perfectly preserved. Once the mold sets, a durable stone replica is created, capturing the unique features and texture of the hands, resulting in a highly lifelike sculpture.
Each memorial casting becomes a meaningful keepsake, encapsulating the deep emotional connection shared between individuals. The finished piece serves as a poignant reminder of their presence, preserving memories in a tangible, lasting form.
Personalised Tribute:
To further enhance your memorial, each casting is airbrushed in an antique metallic colour of choice, and mounted on a marble base and personalised with laser-engraved wording, making your piece truly one-of-a-kind. Additionally, you can choose to have your loved one’s handwriting engraved on the marble base, adding a further personal touch. Whether displayed alone or as part of a larger tribute, these castings offer a beautiful and heartfelt way to honour a loved one.
A respectful and Compassionate Memorial Casting Experience:
During a memorial casting appointment, we take great care in ensuring that the person we are casting is treated with the utmost respect and dignity throughout the entire process. We prepare meticulously to maintain cleanliness and comfort, ensuring that the environment remains peaceful and respectful. The casting process is performed with minimal movement to honor the individual, ensuring that their dignity is preserved at all times.
To further personalise the experience, we offer the family to share a choice of music that their loved one enjoyed. This is played softly during the appointment to create a calming, meaningful atmosphere that reflects their loved one’s preferences and adds an extra layer of sentiment to the experience.
In some cases, family members may prefer not to be present during the casting process. If this is the case, we are happy to visit your loved one alone, carrying out the appointment with the same care and respect. We will keep you updated at every stage, starting with our planned time of arrival, followed by asking for your preference on which hand you would like cast. Once the casting is complete, we will message you as soon as we return to the studio to let you know how the appointment went.
Additionally, once the cast is demolded, we will notify you to reassure you that the cast is now in the drying process. We understand that this is an emotional and sensitive time, and we strive to provide support and transparency throughout the entire journey.
We also recognize that this is an emotional and sensitive time, and making decisions about colour choices and engraving might feel overwhelming. We believe this is not the right moment to be committing to those details, as you are in the process of grieving and have enough to focus on. Rest assured, we will reach out to you closer to the 12-month collection period to ask if you are ready to make these decisions. If you are not ready, we will keep your casting safe and secure in our studio until you are ready to proceed.
